[00:00:02] This is Short Term Rental Management, the show that is all about short term rental property management.
[00:00:10] With your host, yours truly, Luke Karl.
[00:00:16] Welcome to Short Term Rental Management and Luke's Book Club. That's right.
[00:00:23] I'm just assuming that to a certain extent you give a crap about what I read. And I'm going to talk about it today. We've done this before. It's been probably at least a year.
[00:00:33] And I've been reading some great books lately. I have. I'm very grateful for these books. And I will tell you that books are 100% well. Okay, hold on. Marrying the right human was what is why I'm where I am.
[00:00:49] Thank you to her for encouraging me to not suck. And also reading books. Reading books. I'm telling you, I was not that great at school.
[00:01:00] Went to University of Nebraska at Omaha and wasn't really my thing, but I lived. I moved to the big city at a young age and I. I got the street smarts, man. I learned from being out there and doing and having to get jobs and owning businesses. Own my first business. Well, my full. My first full on, like, legitimate business that you're proud of, you know what I mean? At the age of 25.
[00:01:29] And I just love books. I have written a book. It's up there on that shelf somewhere.
[00:01:34] Wrote a fitness book time about 15 years ago. And I did help Avery with her second book. Did not take credit for it. They actually asked if I wanted to be on the, you know, the COVID or whatever. And I said no, let's give it to Avery. Don't tell her I said that. It's her book after all. But I did help a little bit.
[00:01:51] Very happy to do that. Very proud of that book, which I'm going to start with that book today. Smarter Short Term Rentals. This came out. It's been a long time ago now, but it is here on my.
[00:02:01] My cue. And these are going to be out of order for the most part because that book is a couple years old now, but.
[00:02:10] All right, I'm gonna do my best. It's. It's. It starts to get to the point where these are so long ago, I don't remember them. I have a horrible memory. If you've ever seen the movie Memento, it's about what it's like over here. Not that bad, of course, thank God. But it's not great. And I do try to do things that help, you know, with the memory, make it a little better here and there, but sometimes I don't remember stuff. But I will Tell you a really good book I do remember. So that's one thing to keep in mind here. If there's a book I don't remember a lot about, then it's maybe it wasn't that great. All right, so I'm going to start here with a book called Essentialism, the Disciplined Pursuit of Less.
[00:02:55] I don't remember that one that much. It does look like I finished it.
[00:03:00] I don't know how long ago it was.
[00:03:03] Would have been last year, prior to the new year, I should say.
[00:03:09] Okay.
[00:03:11] Greg McEwen, two million copies sold. I don't specifically remember that one. This next one I definitely remember is called Reset was Dan Heath.
[00:03:21] Dan Heath and his brother write great books.
[00:03:25] They wrote a book together called Upstream, which if you've ever come to any of my lectures or anything on STS Plus.com, you will know that I recommend that book all the time. It is absolutely spectacular.
[00:03:37] And Dan put out a book last year, 25, called Reset, how to Change what's Not Working. And I did very much enjoy it. Not nearly as good, I hate to say, as Upstream, but I'll be honest with you, I don't know that they're ever going to get that good. To me, that Upstream is, that's Upstream is probably a top 20 for me ever.
[00:04:02] But Reset was very good. How to Change what's Not Working. And then I read a book called the Goal Process of ongoing improvement, 30th anniversary edition.
[00:04:12] This was a very good book, I will say. It was extremely long and tedious. They did, I remember they, they spent way too long. The book had a main character.
[00:04:23] They spent way too long going in depth as to the main character's day and his car and his wife and trauma and trials and tribulations. And, you know, it was a bit, I guess it was maybe a little too fiction for me, but it was a very, very, very good book. And I do highly recommend that you read this if you are a business owner of any kind. This is a very, very large publication. It's been around for 30 years and lots of reviews and very highly regarded, extremely famous book. I highly recommend. Dr. I believe it's a Dr.
[00:05:00] Goldblatt gold rat. Sorry.
[00:05:04] And he may not be a Dr.
[00:05:08] Elihu Gold Rat.
[00:05:12] I don't think he's a doctor.
[00:05:15] Thousands of great reviews. Spectacular book. Be prepared for that one. If you're looking for books, if you're coming here looking for book suggestions, which I hope you are, that's a great one that you do need to read. But be ready for it. It's long and lots and lots of like storylines and things like that, which I wasn't expecting.
[00:05:35] But it is very effective, I suppose in helping you run your company more effectively.
[00:05:42] Although the book is loosely based on, for lack of a better way to put it, some sort of factory assembly line, sort of sort of business. Again, showing its age a little bit there.
[00:05:54] Ryan Holiday was next. Right thing right now. Good values, good character, good deeds. I did, I hate to say it, I did not get through this book. I love Ryan Holiday. I think he's spectacular. My wife actually met him recently. We've been seeing him around town here a little bit. Might, might, might even have a house here now or been here on vacation anyway. Here, beautiful Florida where I live. Fantastic place to do vacation rentals, which is why I'm here.
[00:06:19] Well, let's be real, I'm here for the beach.
[00:06:22] Let's be real, I'm here because my wife likes it here, you know. But anyway, love Ryan Holiday. He's spectacular. One of my heroes. That book I struggled with a little bit wasn't his fault.
[00:06:38] Read a book called who's eating your pie? Essential financial advice that will transform your life. I don't know that it transformed formed my life, but I did enjoy it.
[00:06:51] It's basically, it's. It's to teach you how to make sure that you're set up to live a happy life towards the end kind of a deal. How to build real wealth as a salaried employee.
[00:07:09] Take steps each day to ensure moving forward towards a wealth building goals. That kind of a thing. Thing.
[00:07:16] Pretty good book for just general financial advice and reality. The nice dose of reality. Essential financial advice that will transform your life. Who's eating your pie?
[00:07:31] Worth reading.
[00:07:33] Not life changing. And then Mr. Grant Cardone, believe it or not, put out a new book last year, the wealth creation formula. And I may be wrong about this. I did get a little bit out of touch with Mr. C.
[00:07:46] Uncle G.
[00:07:50] The release date on Audible is listed as September of 25, which is likely. When I did read this, might have been October.
[00:07:58] And you know, I've. I hate to say it, I've fallen a little bit out of love with Mr. Mr. Cardone because of all of his political stuff on the Internet. It's not my thing. I. Not that his politics aren't my thing. I just don't think that we need to be getting that involved with politics unless you're a politician. So that is a bit of a turn off for me. But I am A huge Uncle G fan.
[00:08:20] His books have no doubt 100% changed my life. 10x is a fantastic place to start for anybody that's trying to make changes in their life towards a better, you know, more successful future. And I will say that I highly, highly recommend Wealth Creation Formula. Really enjoyed it.
[00:08:43] So I got to give credit where credit is due. I can confidently say that I would not be where I am today had it not been for Mr. Grant Card own and his books.
[00:08:54] Very inspiring to say the least.
[00:09:00] To say the least. Wealth Creation Formula came out last fall. Good stuff.
[00:09:06] From there I went to a book called Start Thinking Rich.
[00:09:11] When did this come out? This came out 24th October of 2421 harsh truths to take you from broke to financial freedom.
[00:09:25] I will say sometimes I get sick of this financial freedom crap. You know what I mean? Like everybody's promising all this stuff, but I read several books around the same subject and I don't specifically remember this one blowing me away. I don't remember.
[00:09:46] So sorry to say, Dr. Klontz, Dr. Brad Klon, start Thinking Rich. I don't have many nodes on this one. 21 harsh truths to take away from Take you from broke to financial freedom. I could have enjoyed it. But again, back to my initial comment about my memory. It's not sticking out there too well. We're hiring realtors.
[00:10:07] This show is brought to you by the Short Term Shop.
[00:10:12] Join our exciting team in the best vacation markets in America.
[00:10:17] We're currently hiring agents in Gulf Shores, the Poconos and Outer Banks.
[00:10:25] Email
[email protected] that's
[email protected] the anxious generation next how the great rewiring of childhood is causing an epidemic of mental illness. I did not finish this. Well, maybe I did. It says Mark. It's. It's marked as finished.
[00:10:48] I don't remember finishing it. I remember it being a little heavy and maybe not something that I was able to super relate to being a product of the very early 1980s.
[00:11:03] Friend of mine recommended it.
[00:11:08] It's about the collapse of mental health in the era of smartphones, which I disagree with that.
[00:11:14] I do. I mean, again, again, we're talking about, you know, 20 hour book versus a subtitle. But I don't, I don't think that some smartphones and social media are causing mental health problems. I think people are causing them.
[00:11:29] You know what I mean? Like, nobody's forcing you to play around on that phone all day.
[00:11:33] Anyway, the money habit was next, which was Mike McCallowicz worry free way to financial independence. Huge Michalowitz fan. I would say a super fan. Once again, my wife has met him. She's met all the cool people.
[00:11:48] I did not fall in love with this book, which was my fault. I do feel I'm. I've maybe outgrown it a little bit.
[00:11:56] I would almost even say that this was sort of a part two of Prophet first, which is his biggest book. I've read every single one of his books.
[00:12:06] This book came out first of the year.
[00:12:12] From what I can tell, it's maybe not doing all that well. It only has 34 reviews, unfortunately. But huge Michalowitz fan.
[00:12:21] I did finish the book. I liked it. I read it the day it came out but didn't knock my socks off. I feel like I've outgrown it a little bit. And then I did. I will teach you to be rich. Ramit Sethi.
[00:12:35] This book, I highly recommend. We should read this book. It's been fantastic. This was, I think my second book of the year so far, I believe of this year.
[00:12:46] I will teach you to be rich.
[00:12:49] Six week program that works. No bs. Six week program that works. The subtitles, catchphrase crap. Nobody cares. You know, it's bs but it was a good book. I wish I would have read this book when I was starting out. I do feel like again, I was maybe outgrown this book a little bit, but I really enjoyed it.
[00:13:05] He talks a lot about cultures and how different cultures handle money differently and things like that. And great book.
[00:13:13] Absolutely Recommend. Huge book. 10 11,000 reviews on Audible alone. It's called no guilt, no excuses, no bs. Just a six week program. Blah, blah, blah, blah blah. I will teach you to be rich. If you're starting out and want some help.
[00:13:28] How do I do mutual funds and stocks and all this stuff? And what do I do with my money? It's money. It's financial education. This is the problem with the world. The world is not taught money. You do not learn about money in school. And it's a flaw.
[00:13:44] I certainly didn't learn about it from my parents other than how to not have any. Sorry mom and dad, but you don't have any money.
[00:13:53] They seem to want to stay that way too, you know, but it's too late. They're sitting there in their late 70s.
[00:14:02] Well, it's never too late. I shouldn't say it's too late. It's never too late. But it would be tough at that point. How much, how much work do you have? Left in you, you know. But anyway, great book. I would say if you're looking for a little bit more financial education, highly recommend that one. I will teach you to be rich. Read that one. Especially if you're starting out and then similar subject, the art of spending money.
[00:14:29] Massive fan of this book. This is Morgan Housel. As a matter of fact, I did not like Mr. Housel's huge book. He wrote a book called the Psychology of Money. I was not a big fan of that one for whatever reason.
[00:14:48] But this one, the art of spending money. Simple choices for a richer life. 10 out of 10.
[00:14:56] October of last year it came out. Again, not a ton of reviews. Well, 1300 reviews.
[00:15:05] So it's a very short audible six hours.
[00:15:08] I usually listen on 1.8 or to 2, 2 times somewhere in that neighborhood.
[00:15:14] Best selling author of Psychology of Money and same as ever. I have not read that book. Never even heard of it actually. Lessons on harnessing the power of money to live a happier life.
[00:15:27] 10 out of 10 the art of spending money.
[00:15:30] Highly recommend.
[00:15:34] Then I did some self dev stuff which may not be your thing. These are not business books. I did a book called Stop letting everything affect you.
[00:15:45] Daniel Chidiak, how to break free from overthinking Emotional chaos and self sabotage.
[00:15:57] Matter of fact, let me check here.
[00:16:02] I believe I was reading that book. I read while I run, by the way. I listen while I run. I believe I was at Universal and very early hours of the morning when I was listening to this one. Came out last year. Once again, very, very, very very short book. 3 hours and 44 minutes for the regular speed.
[00:16:27] Apparently also wrote a book, a very large book called who says you can't?
[00:16:32] You do.
[00:16:34] And another book called the Modern Breakup. I've not heard of either of these books but I will say this book was pretty good. A little bit heavy. Not as heavy as the next one. Don't believe everything you think. The expanded edition.
[00:16:47] Why your thinking is being is the beginning in the end of suffering.
[00:16:52] This book was very heavy. Why? Because I read two in a row with the same subject.
[00:16:57] You know, self dev can get a little bit hairy every now and then and that's kind of where I was at on this one. But again a very short book. 2 hours and 36 minutes. So you're talking you know like one or two runs there.
[00:17:09] 1700 reviews. Came out in the octo end of 24.
[00:17:16] But a very good book. Matter of fact I wrote down several quotes from the book and it's basically just about getting out of Your head.
[00:17:30] Highly recommend. But it was heavy. It was pretty heavy. And then I read Turning Pro. This will be my last book, just finished that. It was extremely short. Once again, a lot of short ones.
[00:17:43] 2 hours and 4 minutes for turning Pro. This was written by the gentleman who wrote Art the War of Art, which I did Not Specific. I didn't. I don't specifically remember being blown away by War of Art. I did read it, but I don't remember loving it.
[00:18:04] But now that I've read Turning Pro, I think I would.
[00:18:07] And I would. I don't know that I'm going to revisit War of Art, but I think that if I were to revisit it, I would enjoy it now that I know this guy because the book is very personal. This one is very autobio biographical. It's a very, you know, like heartfelt and true story kind of a thing. Turning Pro. It's about his life, trying to make it as an author and what he did to stop playing around. Basically the guy's name is Stephen Pressfield.
[00:18:36] Field Steven Pressfield.
[00:18:42] Absolutely loved this book. I cannot recommend it enough. It was spectacular. It was short, to the point. Very inspiring. And you know, I really related to the guy. He was just a normal guy that didn't want to have like a regular job and wanted to do better in life and things like that and spent the first 15, 20 years of his adulthood being.
[00:19:06] Not doing the right things, you know, hanging out in bars and stuff like that. And that's what I did.
[00:19:14] But then I got it together and so I did relate to this book very much. Again, I wish this was something I would have read, you know, in my earlier days, but it was very good.
[00:19:25] Highly recommend. So I'm actually, I'm looking for a book right now. I'd love to hear your recommendations. You can email me lukeshortermshop.com love to get a book recommendation from you.
[00:19:36] And there you go. Been. Been way too long. So a little update there on what I've been reading. What was good, what was not good for Luke's Book club. Short Term Rental management. I love you.
