[00:00:02] Speaker A: This is Short term Rental Management, the show that is all about short term rental property management, with your host, yours truly, Luke Karl.
Short Term rental Management.
Today we are going to do five steps to quit your job.
First of all, I want to say it's ridiculous to think that you can quit your job. I don't know where this came from. I've never been that guy. We got to work hard, make money in life. That's just the way it is. But I do have five steps to get you in the direction that you want to go with several stories to tell as well. But before we do that, I'm going to bring in a guest.
Come on in, boss.
I don't know where you're going to go. You're going to have to go right there. There you go. All right, cool. Avery's here. Avery's going to give us her number one thing.
If you're ready to quit your job or you think you want to quit your job. Avery, what's the secret?
[00:01:05] Speaker B: Read a lot of books. Read all the books you can read.
[00:01:09] Speaker A: All right, well, that was my number one, too, so.
[00:01:11] Speaker B: No, we are married.
Okay.
Okay. My next one then is to wake up early. And I know that sounds so. Everybody says that. It's so cliche, but I get most of my work done during the early morning hours before our kids wake up between 4 and 6am So I never have an excuse like, oh, somebody came home sick from school or a problem popped up with a client. So I wasn't able to do all these things that I needed to do. Just get it done before everybody else wakes up.
[00:01:41] Speaker A: I agree 100%. I actually heard a quote from a close friend of mine one time, and he's a very early guy as well. And he said, luke, I wake up early so that I get everything done before the regular people wake up and ruin everything.
[00:01:57] Speaker B: And they do ruin everything. I mean, sometimes when you come in there early in the morning, you ruin everything for me.
[00:02:02] Speaker A: I'm not a regular person. I'm not regular.
[00:02:05] Speaker B: All right, all right.
[00:02:06] Speaker A: Great job. Great job. Wake up early. All right, That'll be number one. Unfortunately, she gave away my number two, which is read more books. But I do want to go back to the number one thing, because it's extremely important that you do wake up early, especially if you're trying to go out and have a career change or maybe get into entrepreneurism, entrepreneurial endeavors, etc, because you got to have structure in your life. You've got to be disciplined and structured and have, you know, this is what happens during this part of the day.
Yellow and white pads all over, you know, keeping notes and keeping track of things and organizers and trello and Monday.com.
otherwise, if you decide you want to quit your job, you're just going to end up eating Doritos on the couch.
And to be honest with you, that's what 98% of the population is going to do if they quit their job.
Most people don't have what it takes. So wake up early and have a structured plan for what you're going to do when you wake up early.
Number two, read one book per week. It was also Avery's actual number one. So it's really number one in general is read more books, Read more books, Read more books, Read more books. And take action on what you read in the books.
Okay?
My advice is, even if you don't like the book, start the. In other words, if it's a topic you're not super sure about, start it. And if you get one chapter in and you don't like it, abandon it. Move on to the next. I used to have a big problem where I would start a book and not like it and I would kind of get down on myself about it and then like put books down for two or three weeks or a month and just listen to music. And I'm usually doing all this while I'm running in my morning runs, and I don't do that anymore. If I don't like a book, I will immediately abandon it and move on to the next one. And that has been helping me tremendously.
So my actual advice there is start reading books.
Start the book.
And I'm an audible guy, right? So start the book. If you don't like it, abandon, Move on. It is not your fault that you don't like that book. And it doesn't mean it's not a good book. It just wasn't a good fit. Move on. Find a good fit.
Otherwise, think of all the amazing books you could be missing out on, okay? Read more books.
This program has been brought to you by the Short Term Shop.
The Short Term Shop is the premier vacation rental real estate agency and we are hiring real estate agents in the following markets.
Outer Banks, Shenandoah, Virginia, Galveston, Texas, and the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee.
If you are a real estate agent in one of these markets or want to move to one of these areas, Please contact us careershortermshop.com step number three. Advice number three is forget about real estate and work in real estate. I see far too many people that think they're going to buy some properties and quit their job and just retire and ride off into the sunset like John Wayne with a lever action. And that's not real.
But if you get obsessed with real estate, you've heard me say it a thousand times before.
Get a job in real estate. Sell it.
You could be a home inspector. You could be an electrician. You could work in the trades, which, again, work in real estate. If you're in a real estate area, which every. Every area has got real estate, you could do title work. You could do building development.
The sky's the limit. I've talked about this many, many times on my podcast. But forget about this idea that real estate is going to get you to the point where you're going to quit your job. It's a. It's a farce. It's not rare. It's not. It's not real.
If you want to live the good life, you've got to work your ass off.
Which leads me to my next step. To quit your job. No out of office or vacations.
No out of office or vacations. This is number four.
It drives me nuts when I hear about these folks. They come in my life and they're a general contractor now, and they're going to do this thing and they're going to build houses and they're going to remodel and this and that, and then the next thing you know, they're going to Hawaii. It's just. It's. What are we doing?
Because you own your own business now. You get to go to Hawaii all the time. I don't think so.
You got to stop it with the out of office and the vacations if you want to live the free, the. The wonderful, the good life, which is the slogan of my home state, Nebraska. Go big red.
You've got to rise and grind. Crush it. Kill yourself. Get over this. I'm going to quit my job and live this. What are you going to do?
How are you going to pay the bills? You're going to. Next thing you know, you're going to end up driving Uber, which is nothing wrong with that either.
Because if you hate your job, you should quit your job. Life is too short to be playing around with the job that you hate.
But again, wake up earlier. Figure out the game plan. Figure out what's next.
No out of office. No vacations.
Kill yourself.
That's the only way you're going to make it.
And my last one is. This one's real easy.
Listen to how I built this With Guy Raz every Monday.
This is again for entrepreneurs and for people that want to start a business. You will start to quickly see how odd these people are. They're, they're, they're odd ducks in most cases. Weirdos.
They all have very interesting stories. They were never meant to conform.
They're weird people.
And I'm not saying that you need to be an entrepreneur if you're going to quit your job again. It's only 2.8, 2.3% of the population that's going to end up being a business owner. Entrepreneur from the cash flow quadrant from Kiyosaki. A business owner which means you have lots and lots and lots of employees.
There is a difference between self employed and business owner.
Okay.
But I'm telling you, Guy Ross, I love it every Monday. It's my. It's really my only outlet for entertainment. I don't watch any tv. I don't have time for tv. It's a waste of time. I do listen to music. I listen. I'm actually listening to music right now. I have a setup. Not that you care, but I have it set up here so that you can't hear my music and I can.
And I listen to very, very heavy music.
Like stuff that would scare you, but I enjoy it.
I listen to all kinds of stuff. Old school country, absolutely. But most of the time if it's not Christmas time because you forget about it middle October and we're going Christmas music around here. But I listen to really heavy hardcore and heavy metal anyway. Not that you care.
My. I do. I do love that podcast is my point. Guy Raz how I built this Every Monday listen to that and you'll have better success with getting out of your gig.
All right. Hopefully you got a good pointer or two today.
Nice for the boss to stop by Avery and say hey to us. And she was right about that. Wake up earlier, get it done before everybody else wakes up and you will succeed. Don't overthink it. Luke Carl Short term Rental Management.
